Considering a battery mower, but unsure what it is you’re looking for? You want a great cut, a good battery system and the quality-of-life improvements that come with electric, as well as performance that rivals petrol mowers.
The good news is, you’re in the right place.
Discover what to look for when buying a battery mower, with examples of quality machines that you can order to your door with Hayter®.
Factors to consider when buying a battery lawnmower
The unique benefits of battery are evident from the first use, but if it’s your first time away from petrol, here are the standouts:
• Cordless, with no restrictive or hazardous wires.
• Zero exhaust emissions.
• Lower handle vibration for long work days.
• Quieter operation for public areas (and dogs!)
• Cost-efficiency, with no engine oil, fuel treatment or petrol needed.
• Expandable up-times with larger batteries available.
• Electric-start functionality, for one-button press activation.
The real holy grail is a battery mower that delivers impressive performance across all these areas, backed by additional smart features and trusted build quality.
Battery lawnmower performance
The performance of your battery mower should be the same as a petrol mower of equivalent cutting width; the only real difference should be in the fuel type.
For Hayter, this means ensuring all our battery mowers meet the same rigorous testing standards as their petrol alternatives. This includes extensive studies into Quality of Cut (QOC) and After Cut Appearance (ACA).
With QOC, this ensures that the mower has cleanly cut each blade of grass and transported the clippings right into the back of the grass bag. With ACA, this is our mark of quality to ensure that the appearance of your lawn is first class, especially with those sharp stripes!
All Hayter mowers, whether battery or petrol, are subjected to a robust series of field and laboratory tests that ensure they meet our exacting standards for quality and feel, product integrity and the guarantee that your mower will last up to and beyond the duration of your warranty period.
Electric mower battery size
The size of your mower’s battery makes a huge difference to your uptime, so you must make sure the battery meets the requirements of your home garden’s size or, for the pros, your client’s lawns.
All of Hayter’s battery mowers have recommended garden sizes dependent on the mower’s cutting width – and all of our mowers have removable, swappable batteries, which we call Flex-Force.
The Flex-Force battery system allows you to easily replace or upgrade your battery, as well as swap batteries between multiple machines and Toro power tools for ultimate versatility.
Battery sizes include:
• 60V 2.5Ah: Ideal performance for everyday mowing of smaller lawns, and versatile enough to power Toro’s 60V garden tools for light trimming and tidy-up tasks.
• 60V 4.0Ah: Extended runtime for regular mowing and medium-sized gardens.
• 60V 6.0Ah: Longer-lasting power suited to larger lawns and more demanding conditions.
• 60V 8.0Ah: High-capacity performance for extended mowing sessions and heavier workloads.
• 60V 10.0Ah: Maximum runtime for large properties, long mowing sessions and uninterrupted performance.
Battery mower life
When choosing a battery mower, longevity matters just as much as performance. You should be looking for strong warranty cover on both the mower and the battery, backed by proven build quality that ensures your machine won’t need replacing after just a few seasons.
Hayter mowers deliver on both, with five-year domestic warranty on our Harrier® battery mowers and three-year warranty on our Hawk mowers as standard, alongside a separate three-year warranty on the battery itself, giving you peace of mind where it matters most.
Hayter mowers’ renowned build quality – featuring only the most robust components and offering a full spare parts inquiry service – means you can trust your machine will be built to last.
Push or self-propelled battery mowers?
Choosing between a push or self-propelled battery mower comes down to ease of use, including how long you’ll be using your mower during a cutting session and whether your lawn is flat or uphill.
Self-propelled battery mowers have that extra ‘oomph’, so you can walk effortlessly behind your mower in almost any condition, getting the job done with minimal physical effort.
Push battery mowers are still lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, making them ideal for smaller, flat lawns. If you enjoy a hands-on mowing experience and don’t mind having to push yourself, push battery mowers offer a cost-effective option with the same benefits.
